Whilst the dragons fly high
I am broken winged
fearful of the potholes
that might swallow me alive
Whilst children run in meadows
I have to find a flat path
one safely set
for wheelchair wheels
whilst people lay
sunning in the ocean’s breeze
I lay in a hospital bed
temperatures always at 80 degrees
while you enjoy a blue sky outing
at the park
I feed the squirrels from our car
sharing a picnic lunch
enjoy today
for too easily
your freedom can be swept away
in a moment you on devices may rely
****
I am grateful to be freed of the brace on one arm and the cast on the other. My leg is still in a brace for stability. I can understand why an animal will gnaw its own paw off to be free. I realize I do not accept restraints easily. Now begins the painful rigors of therapy to gain the use of hands.
Freedom may seem like an elusive concept. What freedoms are you grateful for today?
